This Man Scares Me

Larry Clark on Wassup Rockers:

A few observations about Larry Clark:

•He was born in 1943.
•He shoots beautiful and compelling images.
•His films are often about young kids living sexual
and violent lifestyles.
•He calls himself a method director, and he says that
Wassup Rockers is his best film.

I don't know if I'm going to see this one or not. His films are not for everybody.

anton ... here would be best ... for the benefit of others who read my question ...

"I didn't know where to write this, but Larry Clark, the director of "Kids" scares me for two reasons:

a. His movies are really well made and extremely realistically acted.
b. His movies are some of the most extremely disturbing movies, sexually and violently that I have ever seen.

He calls himself a method director, meaning he really wants his characters to go the place emotionally that their characters are supposed to be in the story, with can be a dangerous thing. And his actors are ususally about 15 years old.

He scares me because I am a filmmaker and I wrestle with whether or not morally, I can make films like his, and whether or not I posess any of his talent for shooting these films."

****
i guess my comment would be that the 15 year olds have already been there ... they live it everyday so reinacting it (or living it once again) is probably a 'bad' thing unless they do not receive a new perspective or deeper understanding of what they have and are experiencing.

not having seen his movies, but from what i felt in this interview from how he described it, he creates a new community in which to experience the same experiences thus opening up the perspective and universe to bring in new influences and ideas on what is going on for each of these kids.

scary ... i don't know, he didn't seem like he was trying to pimp their experiences, but trying to use the filming to expose, inform and heal. there are many people who go to the darkness and use it for their own ends and purposes, rather than one who goes to the darkness to 'love' it.

maybe i'm wrong, but anyone with such intention is not one to be scared unless one is scared of growth. i will be looking to find the movie (i suspect if i go to back to LA i could find it ... here in vegas, i'll probably have to wait for dvd).

and YES ... HER HAIR was SCARY!!!!!!!!!
